Sanford Bemidji Medical Center was facing capacity constraints and operational challenges in key clinical areas, including heart and vascular, oncology, behavioral health, the emergency department, the critical care unit, and its perioperative platform. Sanford Bemidji had experienced continued growth over recent years, and strategically wanted to elevate its hospital to become a regional destination center increasing its capabilities / acuity – including the consideration of pursuing Level II or III Trauma Certification. They also wanted to perform deep dive analyses on senior services and virtual health offerings that they had been struggling with internally.
Whitecap Health Advisors led a comprehensive, five-year strategic planning engagement over a three-month planning horizon. The planning effort encompassed a through market assessment evaluating positioning by service line and acuity, assessing internal activity, performance, and asset utilization, and deep dive analyses in the areas of trauma, behavioral health, senior services, and virtual care to inform Sanford Bemidji’s strategic direction in each. Ultimately, Whitecap collaborated leadership to develop a prioritized list of pragmatic strategic and facility initiatives to pursue over the next five years. Key initiatives included the development of a cancer center, integrating heart and vascular services, remodeling the behavioral health center, and expanding the ED, critical care unit, and procedural platform.
“I have worked in healthcare strategic planning, marketing, and business development for over 35 years and have worked with countless data analysis, strategic planning, and market consulting firms. I found Whitecap to be straightforward, responsive, and insightful when it came to answering the key strategic questions we posed. They were timely and concise and consistently delivered the exact product they promised. They were willing to assist in analyzing the data in different ways and even clarified nuances in the information we had not considered. We would definitely hire them again.”
